Surrey goes incineration free

December 11th, 2009

Surrey County Council has announced that it has dropped all plans to build Energy from Waste incinerators. Plans for two incinerators have been withdrawn.

Surrey has realised that dealing with waste through more environmentally sound means is now viable, and that the trouble of getting massively unpopular incinerators through planning is not necessary. Instead, the council plan to build an ‘Eco park’ – the first of its kind in the country. The park will feature a huge anaerobic digester and a gasifier – still a means of destructive thermal treatment, but half the size of the EfW incinerators originally planned (and a third of the North Yorkshire proposal). The cost is far smaller also: £50m, compared to £200m.
